In the information age of today, for people young and old, common social intercourse is non verbal, electronically transmitted and faceless. There is an anonymity in social exchanges that was unthinkable in earlier times. You could be a sixty year old Indonesian man and enter a chatroom pretending to be an eighteen year old bathing beauty from California. While this medium does not make for very honest social intercourse, it facilitates a host of other possibilities.

These are often a great source of sophomoric or college humor, because of the overabundance of young students who populate these chatrooms. Services like Yahoo chat facilitate chatting between existing contacts. For instance one may be online and can be seen to be online by friends and acquaintances who may want to pass the time of day for a while. There are countless others that function as dating sites or sites where to make new friends and acquaintances.

A chatroom may function like a sort of College Board, where information of college activities, upcoming programs relating to the curriculum or of an extra curricular nature may be posted.

There is also an additional function, that of a buddy finder: you may want to get in touch with a friend you lost touch with years ago, maybe in primary school and now want to get in touch, who knows, maybe Yahoo chat could be your buddy finder.

All in all these various chat services provide lots of opportunities for contact building, friendship making, getting finding old friends, making new ones, exchanging college humor, creating college boards or simply saying hi how are you to close friends and loved ones each day!
